Spell Point variant rule from DMG guide seems to be giving Sorcerer's ability to everyone else except warlocks. Normally, one is able to cast any level of a spell maximum of 4 times a day (I think). With the slots, one has to think even about casting level 1 spell. With the spell points, casting level 1 spell costs basically nothing and one can hapilly spam (for example) Shield all day long.
Why isn't this available to Warlocks? It breaks the same mechanism. This would allow Warlocks to take spells like Charm person, Shield for hexblade etc. without punnishing them for not having scalable spells and for casting it with a high level slot.
(I've seen a lot of people playing the Spell Points only with Sorcerrers, combining spell points and sorcerer metamagic points into one pool, allowing them to use these for either metamagic or spells, making sorcerer's more unique.)
Thanks
This variant of the spell point system does not change the way a character prepares spells, casts spells, regains spell points, or any of the other rules from that system. However, the spellcaster’s pool of spell points represents a physical, not just mental, limit on his spellcasting power. DMG Spell Point variant works with Spellcasting, not Pact Magic.
- Jun 24, 2020 I also have a question about the point distribution here. I looking into the DMG SP and converted one spell of each to a sum of points according to their conversion, and if you would spend 1 slot of each level you would have a total of 66, (2,3,5,6,7,9,10,11,13), and your total of SP os 133.
- It would be nice if you were able to enable the optional spell point rule from the DMG in the character sheet. As far as I know, this is not yet a feature, and it would be great to have.
By letting Warlocks use the Spell Point system (so a 5th lv Warlock has 10 points per short rest), it enables them to still utilize low level spells without hesitation. More flexibility.
Your thoughts? At first blush I think it’s less of a problem for warlocks than anyone else.
The main difference in spell points is it essentially lets you combine lower level spell slots into higher level ones. So your sorc can turn a 1 and 2 into a fireball. Warlocks already do that. +

What it would let warlocks do is break their higher level slots into multiple lower, increasing their casting flexibility particularly for 1st and 2nd level spells that don’t scale with up casting in a way they want to worry about.

Spell points is all around more powerful. If your table is good with that, go for it!
Honestly if they aren’t taking short rests, its probably fine. Just keep an eye on how much easier if at all they start negotiating encounters and obstacles.

Warlock using the option will probably have a less explosive impact.
